With nearly half of the population of the endemic Wrybill found at Pukorokoro Miranda during part of the year, and with numbers of shorebirds often exceeding 10,000 the coastline is almost a mandatory stop for any birdwatcher passing by.
MIRANDA SHOREBIRD CENTREWaharau Regional park. 21km just 16 min drive from Miranda. This gentle, short walk through regenerating forest in Waharau Regional Park is ideal for inexperienced bushwalkers.
Start at the information building. Follow the green markers through the kānuka dominated forest and tree ferns.

If you want to keep exploring, join up with one of the rugged tramping tracks towards the Hunua Ranges.
Located on the eastern side of the rugged Hunua Ranges, Waharau Regional Park extends from the range to the coast. The Māori name Waharau means 'the ever-changing stream mouth' and refers to the stream that winds its way down from the eastern Hunua Ranges and flows out into the Firth of Thames.
The Hauraki Rail Trail is a short drive from Hamilton, Auckland and Tauranga and is accessible from the quaint townships of Thames, Paeroa, Te Aroha, Waihi and Matamata. Officially starting from Kaiaua in the North, the start of the trail traces the Shorebird Coast along the Firth of Thames. Riders enjoy contrasting landscapes from the verdant Hauraki Plains, to the intriguing Karangahake Gorge, carved by the forces of nature. Finally, there’s a gentle ride South through lush farmlands to the hometown of the Hobbiton Movie Set. Our new Miranda-Thames section is a flat 45km – Most do in under 2 hours each way, making it suitable for young and old alike. Cruise along the top of stop banks beside the Firth of Thames taking in lush farm lands and wetlands with magnificent views to the Coromandel Ranges. There’s the popular Bugger cafe at Pipiroa as well as the friendly Kopu hotel just south of Thames for light drinks and snacks. HAURAKI RAIL TRAIL12km north of Miranda. Best known for it's fish and chips Kaiaua is a fishermans paradise. Mussle farms just down the road makes for a great days fishing even off the beach. Rays rest reserve is off East Coast Road, approximately 4.5 km south of Kaiaua township and adjacent to the Firth of Thames. It is such a beautiful place to go for a walk on the beach. FISH & CHIPS It's 12km north of Miranda to the Famous Kaiaua Fisheries or 8km's in the opposite direction to the Ocean's divine takeaways and ice-cream shop in Waitakaruru. But our little secret is the Kiwi taste Cafe at the Miranda Holiday park at the bottom of our hill. Even John Gault is very impressed with them.
